Consumerism

IMG_7914

I really try to avoid buying incessantly for my children.  I remember when I was a child, we received gifts on our birthday and Christmas and not too often in between.  At the time I might not have agreed, but today I think it was an excellent conscious decision on my parent's part.

Can I tell you what an exercise in restraint it is?  Sometimes I just can't resist.  Case in point:  Georgia's Dri Knapp princess headband.  I am certain in this photo she was contemplating how she could take a bath with it on her head.  Because it hasn't left its perch.

Although she has let me try it on....

Neck Candy

Silhouette-Locket-Necklace_1

I'd like to have my children's silhouettes in a locket. And perhaps their initials on a bracelet or necklace? I can't decide which one?

Girl's Best Friend: Simple

via

In Brazil, it is tradition to wear a simple band (usually not embellished) on your right hand ring finger when you are engaged--switching to the left hand after "I do." Men don't have to sweat out a year's salary to buy the "rock." And women don't spend inordinate amounts of time sizing up each other's rings. I think it is actually a relief for all parties (okay, maybe the men more than the women). And also there is a lovely tradition here of receiving jewelry with the passage of time and monumental life moments as a couple. You sort of earn the "bling."

I have a simple ring. And I love it. I do not covet big diamonds as I wouldn't feel very comfortable wearing one in São Paulo (crime). But, honest to goodness when I saw this ring. I changed my mind fast.

Simple. Gorgeous. And waiting for a monumental moment (me, that is!)...

Chinnychinchin

Chinnychinchin calls itself an "original line of progressive clothing."
I call it too cute for words. For both Georgia and my closets, please. I'll take the tie for my husband, too.
How darling, really?

Frozen

I asked for a freezer for my birthday. I chose one online and danced with joy over the internet purchase: holy cookie dough and meal planning, hurray.

But then I got depressed that I asked for a freezer (even if it is frost free). When Felipe and I got married I told him that I never wanted any presents that plugged in--not ever. But I used to store accessories in my kitchen cabinets, too.

So today when I was rushing to a meeting with my notes, menus, and swatches in a polka-dotted backpack, I created a luxury wish list. We'll start by replacing the rucksack with the leather satchel. I'll take the one above.

Please.

Is it too much?

If Georgia were SJP's daughter and our life was an HBO program, I am certain that she would have this many hair barrettes. But since we are not a famous family (and no child should have so many accessories), our little hair clip collection will be sold at the ever so charming Balanganda.

Available mid April.

Jewelry is art

It has been a while since I have posted anything fashion.

But I want these items.

Shimmy

I want it all.
The clothes. (especially the pink pants)
I would dance afoot talcum powder and roll in the sand.
Happily.
So Lovely.

If I were in the Northern Hemisphere right now, these three pieces would be my winter uniform.
But I'm more in the market for a black bikini these days.

Heavenly Match

I know this is yesterday's news in the land of (mom) blogging. But in case your postpartum brain is a bit slower (like mine), I bring you some great (not hot off the press) news:

Stella McCartney
and Baby Gap have teamed up to bring us a mini-fashionista toy store of temptations.

Once again, Georgia will have the better wardrobe . I'm thinking that when she reaches a youth size extra large we can potentially share a few things.

For now, I am borrowing her barrettes.

Chemise da Nuit

My late Auntie M always slept in a sleep cap. And all of her pillowcases were satin. This guaranteed that her silvery "once-a-week-wash-and-set" hairdo never lost its fluff. She also only slept in long nightgowns. She passed the nightgown ritual on to all of her nieces. I fine-tuned it a bit and tossed the tiny floral print and flannel part. My gowns are always white and one-hundred percent cotton. If it's cold, I put flannel pants under and an old ratty cashmere cardigan on top.

In case your interested in the tradition, here are a few resources:

I promise I don't wear a sleeping cap. For now, anyway.

Minimalism I

I may have missed out on the whole Jil Sander for Uniqlo collection down here in Brazil. But I am feeling the minimalist tide taking over. My closet. My house. My habits.
Stay tuned...

Children's Day

I read that Scott Schuman (of The Sartorialist fame) spent a few years as a SAHD (stay at home dad), whereby he spent afternoons snapping oodles of photos of his lovely and stylish little girls. And, wouldn't you know it, the idea for his iconic blog was born.

Monday the 12th is "Children's Day" here in Brazil.

Here's to our children. You are our inspiration.

On Style and Men

1. Yves St. Laurent 2. David Bowie 3. Louis XVI 4. James Dean 5. Bob Dylan via Refinery29

I once dated a man who traveled to the beach with his blow dryer. The relationship didn't last. And even though I appreciated Adam Lambert's smokey eyes (really set off those baby blues), I'd be a runaway bride if my fiancee showed up at the alter with "guy-liner".

I do appreciate stylish men (Metrosexuals, no), especially when they are icons. But as a husband? I'd much rather mine who takes a 5 minute shower, prefers a wet suit over leather pants, and lets me do the shopping.

I always wanted a job as a stylist.
